Spiritual Immunity

One day last week I noticed a handful of little red bumps on the side of my leg. I had too much going on in my life at the time to worry about a few little bumps. So, I did my best to ignore them hoping they would just go away. They didn’t….

The few little bumps started to multiply and spread. As their numbers grew, so did the pain associated with them. Since I could no longer ignore them, next I tried to self medicate. This was also unsuccessful.

When it was clear that I was fighting a losing battle, I made an appointment with the doctor. Those of you with medical backgrounds or experience with these painful little bumps have probably already guessed what I suspected and the doctor confirmed. I had shingles…..

The doctor explained that the condition was caused by the chicken pox virus and a lowered immune system. She went on to discuss all of the factors that contribute to a weakened immune system such as stress, poor diet and lack of sleep and exercise. I left her office wondering if I even had an immune system….

Since that time, I have resolved to do better. I am determined to focus more on the things that will boost my immune system and help me to be healthier and better able to resist illness.

As I thought about all of the things that help to strengthen our physical immune system, it occurred to me that we also need to strengthen our spiritual immune system. As we focus on the things that boost our spirituality such as prayer, scripture reading and meditation, we are better able to withstand and resist the trials, adversities and “illnesses” that attack our spirit.

So, this week I am going to concentrate on doing the things that will boost both my physical and spiritual immune systems. With both physical and spiritual strength I will have the ability to serve how and where my Heavenly Father would have me serve…..I will be ready when He calls….

Shingles! Yuck! Isn’t it funny how it takes losing something to remind us to pay attention to what we have. I hope you get feeling better soon and stay feeling better by taking better care of yourself both physically and spiritually. :)
