I really enjoy watching the sunrise and sunset everyday as I drive to and from work. There have been some especially beautiful ones recently and they have left me in awe as I have admired God’s handiwork. Sometimes, when I am having a particularly difficult day, I can’t help but think that an exceptionally beautiful sunrise or sunset was intended just for me.
Throughout the countless trips that I have made to and from work I have learned a few things about the rising and setting of the sun. I have learned that no matter how spectacular these sunrises and sunsets may be, they are brief, fleeting and wholly dependent upon the vantage point of the viewer. You must be at the right place at just the right moment. Even then it is only a few moments before the sky fades to bright white or pitch black and the magnificent hues and colors are only a memory.
I was reminded of this a few days ago. It was one of those mornings when I hit the snooze button on my alarm one too many times. By the time I rushed out the door, the sun was high in the sky and any traces of the sunrise were long gone. Later in the day I saw several photographs of the extraordinarily beautiful sunrise that morning and I was disappointed that I had missed it.
It occurred to me that many of the things in our lives are like this. Opportunities and possibilities are often missed because we are not in the right place at the right time or because we wait too long or hesitate. If we do our best to be aware of these opportunities and possibilities and attempt to put ourselves in the right place at the right time, I believe that our Heavenly Father will guide and direct our paths. If we strive to stay close to Him and listen, He will help us to be where we need to be, when we need to be.
Sometimes, when it appears that we are not at the right place at the right time and we miss an opportunity that we really want, it is because the opportunity we really need is yet to come. So the next time I miss a beautiful sunrise, instead of feeling regret, I will look forward to the better more beautiful sunrise waiting tomorrow that was intended just for me….
